Welcome to the Scottish Planning Local Government and Environmental Bar Group website.  This site has been established in order to provide contact details of Group members and to provide advice in relation to instructing Advocates.  It is intended to assist all practitioners, whether solicitors or other professionals who might consider the use of counsel in the area of planning, local government and environmental law.  In addition to a list of members of the Group, this site contains other information which it is hoped will be of assistance to the busy practioner.

For those professionals who wish to instruct counsel direct, the terms and conditions page of this site in the sitemap section contains the standard terms of instruction of counsel prepared by the Faculty of Advocates and published with the permission of the Dean of Faculty.  The How to Instruct page contains a list of non-legal professional organisations whose members may instruct counsel direct and a link to the Faculty of Advocates' website providing full details of qualifying organisations.

The Group itself provides a focus for Advocates experienced and interested in the fields of planning, local government and environmental law.  Members of the Group can provide advice and assistance in relation to those subject-areas as well as in relation to court challenges.

In addition, the Group arranges lectures, seminars and occasional conferences as well as providing responses to planning consultation documents issued by the Scottish Government.  Importantly, it regularly provides speakers for conferences and seminars organised by other bodies and organisations.  It also organises social events such as the annual dinner and the Christmas drinks reception which is always very well attended by professionals in the field and is interested in forging links with others involved in the planning system.
